Interview with a Nicobar Pigeon
We have with us a Nicobar pigeon, the closest living relative of the dodo bird. They are 16 inches long and proficient fliers. You have been in the shadow of the dodo bird for who knows how long . . .
Sailor Grub
I was fascinated when I read up on how much food they would need to bring. The ships must have been nearly sinking with food at the start and ready to topple over by the end of the trip. I didn't make the weight calculations, though. That would be a lot of guessing on my part.
Dodo Comic of Yore
The penguin-looking fells in the first panel here are the referenced dodos. You can kind of tell from the beak and that they aren't flying, but I don't know why they drew them straight up unless it was purely from description (which is very possible).
Sailor’s Sea Chest
Sailors of the 1600s would get one chest to bring along. I didn't draw the shoes because they weren't really used on the ship. They were more for running ashore and being cooth.
