about.

I was never great at flying kites but it is such a romantic activity. Romantic as in mythical, not lovey-dovey. And sure, a badger might usually eat a mouse. But these guys found they shared a love of kites. The badger wasn’t starving so spared their new friend and together they have been flying kites for years..

The pattern comes with full instructions, close-up images to highlight stitch detail, and a basic stitch guide.

Pattern for personal use only.

2012 pen and ink illustration with watercolor

original illustration

I drew this little beauty way back in 2012, less than a couple years after getting back into drawing. This is made with pen and ink and then watercolor.

embroidery

How exciting to convert my old illustration to a new beast. I almost went with satin stitch over the body, but it’s better to lean into the strengths of the medium. So I went with simpler straight stitches for a more iconic look.

kites

The best experiment in this pattern was the kites. I used a loose stitch for the string. The kite is fabric lightly attached using appliqué at the corners. And the kite tail, I wasn’t sure what to do. In the end, I went with this adorable twine, but that was mostly because I couldn’t find the fine ribbon I was looking for.
